Description

Various visualizations that demonstrate the behavior of several search trees, including BST, AVL Tree, Splay Tree, and Red-Black Tree. Users can insert and delete values. Rotations are shown for the tree structures that use them, and coloration for the red-black tree.

Evaluation

Each visualization lets the user enter their own data, and either insert, delete, or search. The details differ depending on the search tree being shown. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of details on the actions. But you can get some sense for what is taking place on the various operations. Depending on the search tree, there are various details like coloration or balance factor. There is no pseudocode.

One major defect is that the visualization defaults to animation mode, yet all of the useful aspects of the presentation are geared toward step-wise mode. In step mode, you get a brief explanation for each step, which you just can’t see in animated mode.

Usage Notes

The URL above takes you to a page with a menu on the left. Click on the type (JavaScript, Java) that you want, and then you can select the particular visualization. As of this writing, there is a link for the JavaScript AVL tree but it seems to be missing.

Before starting, be sure to click on the "pause" button so that you can step through the activity. Otherwise you miss the explanation.
